Now heres a topic I rarely like to talk about. Not because I’m not comfortable with it or anything, but just because I always feel like I’m walking on ice with others if I say what I feel, or the wrong thing. Homosexuality is up for a huge debate right now, and both sides can be very passionate about it. And, although I have yet to read the bible and decide for myself what the passages mean, from what I’ve heard I have already started to form an opinion about it.
To me, homosexuality is no big deal. Who am I to stand there and say ‘sorry, you two don’t really love each other’ or ‘Men can’t love men, that’s between women and men only.’ I don’t have someone coming up to me and saying ‘Sorry, you can’t do this because you’re a girl’ So why do I have the right to do that to someone else? True, gender and love are different things, but it’s the same concept. Why are people discriminating against homosexuals? Just because they’re different? Just because they listen to a preacher who says that they’re an abomination?
News flash, its 2010. Times have changed. I’m a Christian, and I believe that the bible is an amazing book. But there are passages that wouldn’t make sense in today’s world. Like how we shouldn’t eat crustation or pork. No one follows this anymore.
It really kills me to see the bible being used in ways to prosecute people and cause violent acts of hate. It has been used this way many times before, and I’m afraid this isn’t the end. People use the bible to make their opinions look like a message from Go. I don’t know about you, but when I think ‘god’ I think love and acceptance. I can’t even fathom why the bible says to love everyone, no matter what, but then turn around and say ‘Oh! Except for these people. You can hate them.’ They’re still people aren’t they? They haven’t done anything wrong. They’re just trying to live their normal lives, and love like the rest of us.
And if all these scientific studies are right, and its not a choice, then why discriminate against something they can’t help? I highly doubt people look at homosexuals, and all the pain they go through and say ‘Hey, that’s a good idea. I want to be part of that.’. If it was as simple as choosing, we wouldn’t have so many people dying, committing suicide, etc. If it was a choice, they wouldn’t last through the pain, and would have chosen to go back to being heterosexual. There is no choice.
I don’t think that the bible is against gays. I think it’s all in how you perceive it. People really need to stop following what higher powers say, and actually research this information themselves. Its when they do this, that they form their true opinion on the matter, and not just take it blindly from someone else.
I believe that god loves everyone. I also believe that love has no bounds, and that includes gender. God wouldn’t hate on someone just because they are spreading love around. People just need to learn to be more accepting of each other.
Happy October everyone =)
I agree with you that the Bible says we should love one another, but I do not know where it says in the Bible as you put it “‘Oh! Except for these people. You can hate them” The Bible I grew up on does not honor hatred. Many proclaimed religious people stand behind the Bible and to do their anti-homosexual protesting, but hide from the Bible when they are doing their own sinful acts. Fear of the unknown is what drives hatred. A person cannot help the way they feel when it comes to love from the heart. Love and hatred are two very strong feelings, and countless people have died because of it. Since many people strongly believe that homosexuality is a choice, they believe it can be cured. I also agree with you when you wrote, “If all these scientific studies are right, and its not a choice, then why discriminate against something they can’t help?” Discrimination is done out of fear of the unknown; it is just that they are different that makes people fear them or even try to harm them. Homosexuals have been targets of violence for many years; I am glad there are now laws punishing people who commit hate crimes. My motto is “live and let live.” Nobody has the right to tell, or should I say demand another to stop loving the person whom they love as long as it is between two consensual adults. A person of true faith can pray and ask God to forgive—all sinners who have sinned against him. There are so many things in the Bible that are considered a sin, but the focus in this society is only on Homosexuality.
ReplyDeleteI really liked the approach you took win this blog and I really admired what you said because I feel the same way. I said before that NO ONE follows The Bible 100%. And like you said that in The Bible where it says that homosexuality is an abomination, but not too far from it, it says that eating meat (such as pork and shrimp) is an abomination. People who judge homosexuality are ALL HYPOCRITES! Not only because it says “Love thy neighbor”, but because most of the population at one point have eaten meat in their lives and continue doing so most likely. Its true what you said that people don’t follow that rule anymore. So I guess it goes to show how people like to cherry-pick certain things in The Bible and use it as a weapon for hate & discrimination. People always want to have something to hate, and they will always turn to The Bible to find something. I believe people like that are really shameful and bring The Bible a bad name. When you said, “I highly doubt people look at homosexuals, and all the pain they go through and say ‘Hey, that’s a good idea. I want to be part of that.’” This is what I say all the time when people think that homosexuality is a choice. Being a gay guy myself, I really had no idea that there were actually straight people that think like you do. Then again you day say that its 2010 now, people need to just get over things. Finally, I must say “Thank You So Much!” and it was actually a pleasure reading your blog. I got to say that it really made me happy to know that people like you exist. Someone that does not discriminate… Sincerely- Jaime Rubio.
ReplyDeleteI had never really thought about it in the context that you brought it up when referring to homosexuality but it is so true when you said: "I highly doubt people look at homosexuals, and all the pain they go through and say ‘Hey, that’s a good idea. I want to be part of that." No one willingly pursues a lifestyle that they know will cause them pain and suffering or prosecution. [[Then again there are masochists lol]] but my point is that we really never seek out that type of pain. Many people are fine and content with a life where they hardly are noticed or they can be accepted and nothing comes from it. And I agree that everyone needs to be in acceptance with others even if they are different. But I also mentioned in my own blog response for this week in regards to how homosexuality should be in the dominant culture that it should be there but we can't force this type of thinking on any society. The society makes its changes when it is ready to handle it and I think that now with all this legislation coming out that things are really moving along and we can see changes and advances that mean good news for people who are homosexual. They no longer have a majority against them and will have a majority on their side fighting for what they believe is right. Not what people are forcing on them and telling them to believe is right. It is just like a church that pressures its followers. They will never win an argument where they try to force ideas onto their people, they must be educated and convinced...Or brainwashed but thats something else lol Anyways it is as simple as waiting for these things to be nudged along by us and then working themselves out.
